Clean Building Performance Standard: Plan for Compliance Now
With limited exceptions, all Washington skilled nursing facilities and assisted living centers must comply with Washington’s Clean Building Performance Standard, which aims to reduce energy use in buildings throughout Washington. The staged implementation timeline follows:
- Tier 1 – Buildings Over 50,000 sq. ft.
- > 220,000 sq. ft. → Deadline June 1, 2026
- 90,001–220,000 sq. ft. → Deadline June 1, 2027
- 50,000–90,000 sq. ft. → Deadline June 1, 2028
- Tier 2 – Buildings 20,000–49,999 sq. ft.
- Deadline: July 1, 2027
Providers must assess and determine compliance readiness; requests for exceptions must be filed no later than 180 days before each compliance date. There are several resources for WHCA members, including an information webinar with the Department of Commerce related to implementation requirements, and a handy checklist to help you determine readiness. The checklist includes hyperlinks to key information. Noncompliance may result in fines. Click here to access those materials.
