The Washington State Board of Nursing has filed a CR-102 (Proposed Rule) to amend nursing assistant (NA) rules in chapter 246-841A WAC on March 31, 2026 under WSR 26-08-087.
The proposed rule builds on the board’s collaborative process and reflects feedback received from interested parties during rule workshops held throughout 2025. The amendments aim to improve clarity, reduce barriers to certification, and align requirements with current practice and federal regulations.
The proposed rule includes:
- Integrating skills testing into training programs
Formalizes the transition of the nursing assistant skills exam into board-approved training programs to improve access, efficiency, and student outcomes. - Removing specialty curricula requirements from rule
Removes the requirement for specialty curricula (mental health, developmental disabilities, and dementia) from chapter 246-841A WAC to reduce barriers and program costs, while allowing training to occur through employers or other pathways. - Incorporating statutory changes
Aligns rules with recent legislation, including provisions related to early remediation, substance use disorder monitoring, and other updates impacting nursing assistants.
