Nurse Delegation Training – Now Available

The act of delegating nursing tasks to qualified, trained caregivers can be tricky, particularly with all the moving parts of what must be documented, checked off, and filed. RN delegators in assisted living are not required to take training before assuming delegation, and yet a thorough grasp of the delegation process is essential to a successful, systematic delegation program.

WHCA’s Vicki McNealley has developed a free resource for anyone wanting to learn more about RN delegation. Whether you are an administrator or a nurse, learning what is expected of the RN delegator is critical to regulatory compliance. There are 15 short videos (topics listed below); you can review all the videos in order, or watch whichever addresses your immediate needs. Sample delegation forms are also included for download and personalization.

Topics:

  • Introduction to RN delegation in assisted living
  • What can be delegated (and what CANNOT be delegated)
  • Getting consent from the resident for initial delegation
  • Who is involved in the delegation process?
  • When can delegation happen?
  • How to check caregiver credentials and training certificates
  • How to determine caregiver competency in a delegated task
  • RN delegator’s assessment of a resident
  • Supervising the process: ongoing training for delegated caregivers
  • RN delegation recordkeeping methods
  • Task instructions for delegated caregivers
  • Methods to contact the RN delegator
  • Transferring delegation to another RN
  • Rescinding RN delegation
  • Tips and hints for a successful RN delegation system

WHCA has also included links to the DSHS delegation forms, should the RN delegator choose to use those.  Additional articles are available as well, and a full three-hour recording of the entire process is available should someone want to watch the process all at once.

WHCA also offers nurse delegation training for caregivers for a small fee. The 9-hour Core Nurse Delegation course can be found here: Core Nurse Delegation for Nursing Assistants and Home Care Aides | WHCA and the 3-hour Special Focus on Diabetes Delegation training is here: Nurse Delegation for Caregivers: Special Focus on Diabetes | WHCA.
