“Shiver Me Timbers!” An Earthquake Exercise for LTC!

The “Shiver Me Timbers!” earthquake exercise program has been created specifically for Long Term Care facilities. Different facilities may be at different levels of readiness to participate in a disaster exercise therefore the exercise includes different levels of involvement. The “Shiver Me Timbers!” exercise levels range from having simple discussions with staff about earthquake preparedness and response to demonstrating earthquake response to leadership decision making and finally discussion about evacuation needs. All the necessary exercise materials have been created so the exercise can easily be organized and run by a facility.

The intent is for facilities to hold the exercise at the same time as the Great Shakeout earthquake exercise, held annually on October 17th.  The “Shiver Me Timbers!” exercise may be held at any time throughout the year, though.

The Northwest Healthcare Response Network is asking Long Term Care partners to register intent to participate and conduct the “Shiver Me Timbers!” on October 17th, 2024. A training will be held for anyone running the facility-level exercise introducing the provided materials and how to conduct the exercise. The date for that training will be announced soon.

The Northwest Healthcare Response Network Long Term Care Advisory Committee supports this exercise.
