Know Your Rights: Civil Immigration Enforcement in Washington

A series of executive orders signed in the first week of the new Trump administration has empowered the U.S. Immigrations and Custom Enforcement (ICE) to conduct investigations and arrests in places like schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. Many WHCA members, as well as other facilities across the country, have expressed concern about how such activities may impact their residents and staff.

The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) is preparing a “Dear Provider” letter regarding ICE investigations and actions in long-term care facilities. We anticipate this letter to be released in the near future.

In the meantime, providers and their staff should be aware that the Washington Attorney General’s Office has created a website that addresses civil immigration rights in our state. Please encourage your team to read this information, as it will be important if immigration enforcement officers visit your facility.
