Assisted Living Care Academy Coming in December!

Washington Health Care Association values the hard work and dedication of the wellness staff in assisted living communities.  Back by popular demand, we’ll be offering the four-day virtual Assisted Living Care Academy (ALCA) on December 3, 4, 9, and 10 via Zoom.  This intensive course is geared towards nurses and lead caregivers who are new to the assisted living environment.  The course is much more than PowerPoint presentations – attendees will be guided through the regulations pertinent to their job duties by experts in the field who have done the jobs and learned lessons along the way!

Come experience the down-to-earth approach to thriving in the assisted living setting through systems development and implementation strategies.  Together, we will cover the following topics:

  • Assisted living: yesterday, now, and tomorrow
  • Intermittent nursing services systems and expectations
  • The role of the LPN and RN in assisted living
  • Assessments and negotiated service agreements
  • Medication management, including:,
    • The differences with medication assistance, administration, and accurately directing others
    • Building strong medication ordering, transcribing, storing, delivery, and documentation methods
    • Resident rights related to medications
    • Nurse delegation
    • Drug diversion
    • Medication errors
  • Mandatory reporting and incident investigations
  • The state survey process
  • Policies and procedures
  • Staff training requirements
  • Quality assurance
  • Disaster/emergency planning

Perhaps one of the highlights of this class involves discovery and self-reflection.  Each attendee will review their job description and determine what responsibilities truly belong, and what tasks and duties might be better shared with others on the care team. This exercise prompts one to re-evaluate their personal and professional boundaries and sets the wellness leader up for a successful career in assisted living, where burnout is not the primary concern!

Register today.  Have more questions?  Email Vicki McNealley at the WHCA office. We look forward to seeing you in December!
