Grassroots Update: It’s Time to Act on AL Funding

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee speaks at a news conference next to a video display showing a chart of the "reproductive number" of each case of the coronavirus in both eastern and western Washington state, Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at the Capitol in Olympia, Wash. The chart shows the average number of other people infected by a person who has the virus, and Inslee cited a recent increase in that number as he announced Tuesday that Washington state will require people to wear facial coverings in most indoor and outdoor public settings, under a statewide public health order in response to ongoing COVID-19 related health concerns. Governor Inslee is at work now developing the first of three budget proposals that will ultimately be considered by the Legislature, which means now is our first big opportunity to advocate for funding in the State budget. The labor component of AL Medicaid rates is discounted to only cover 79% of costs. That shortfall means providers can’t recruit and retain enough quality staff and are forced to turn away residents reliant on Medicaid. We are urging Governor Inslee and state legislators to support full funding for AL wages in the Governor’s proposed budget.
