Gratitude Makes the World Go Round

Eric Negomir, WHCA Government Relations Manager

Thanksgiving isn’t the only setting where gratitude shines – it is an essential part of effective advocacy. Think about how good it feels when somebody sincerely thanks you. It encourages you to help them in the future, doesn’t it? And the more specific and heartfelt the ‘thank you’ is, the more it reinforces the satisfaction of doing good.

As advocates, we constantly ask policymakers for support. Reward them and incentivize further support by expressing your gratitude whenever possible. Whether it’s a “thank you for taking the time to meet” when lawmakers arrive for a facility tour, or an “I appreciate your support for long-term care providers in the budget” after the Legislative Session has ended, this small action has enormous impact. Don’t forget to thank the advocates as well – showing appreciation for your staff and residents who take a moment to advocate is not just heartwarming, but imperative.
