Grassroots Update: Three Things Every LTC Provider Should Know About Advocacy

Advocacy is one of the most important tools long-term care providers have to shape policy, protect access, and support residents. You do not need to be a lobbyist to make a difference in the state legislature or with federal officials. Here are three things every provider should know about effective advocacy:

  1. Relationships Matter More Than One-Time Outreach: The most effective advocacy happens before a crisis or legislative vote. Lawmakers are more responsive to people they know and trust. Building year-round relationships with elected officials and their staff creates credibility when important issues arise.
  2. Your Real-World Experience Is Powerful: Providers live the impact of policy decisions every day. Staffing shortages, Medicaid rates, regulatory barriers, and resident needs are not abstract issues—they are daily realities. Sharing clear, real examples helps policymakers understand what is happening on the ground.
  3. Advocacy Is Everyone’s Job: Owners, administrators, nurses, caregivers, staff, residents, and families all have valuable voices. Advocacy is strongest when multiple perspectives speak up together. A broad chorus carries more weight than one person alone.

Bottom Line: You do not need to be political to be effective. Stay engaged, tell your story, and build relationships. Those three actions can make a real difference.
