Session Overview
It All Comes Down to a Ruler
During this session, attendees will learn how to differentiate pressure ulcers from other lesions. The presenter will explain the differences between venous stasis, arterial, skin tears and surgical wounds. Attendees will also learn guidelines for the measurement and assessment of wounds. The presenter will provide information on measuring techniques, the frequency of assessments and how to document findings and treatment plans.
If It Isn’t Getting Smaller, Change What You are Doing
During this session, attendees will learn the basic requirements of treating wounds. The presenter will focus on how to remove causative agents, the removal of necrosis, how to balance the bacterial count and how to treat the entire patient, not just the wound. Attendees will also learn about the importance of nutrition in wound care and how to formulate a treatment plan. The presenter will also provide information on the various categories of wound dressings including hydrocolloid, clear dressings, collagens and filling agents. As well, attendees will learn about adjunct treatments utilizing vacuum, hyperbaric and thermal modalities. This session will also provide information on treating nonpressure wounds and when a patient should be referred to an outside practitioner for specialized wound care.
Avoidable and Unavoidable Pressure Ulcers
Attendees will take a look at the F-Tags surrounding avoidable and unavoidable pressure ulcers and learn to distinguish wounds and categorize them like a surveyor would. This session will help attendees understand what surveyors look for in wound treatment, care and documentation. (This session will include discussion on F-Tags.)
